If you can, detour to Firenze to check out the Boboli Gardens. There are a lot of cool things in that city, but I remember really liking those gardens, all the cool sculptures and fountains, and a really funky tree with some massively exposed roots. I think you two would dig it (or Fiesole, a lesser-traveled tourist spot in the hills north of Florence, some cool ruins, great views, museum, etc.). I checked out your new possible route to Rome!
